Friday February 12th
Celebration of Queens of the Stone Age and other rock classics at Cherry!
From 11pm until very late!
So we’ve been looking back at some of our favourite bands through rock history of late and this Friday night we’ll be spinnin’ the best from Queens of the Stone Age!
After Kyuss riff lord Josh Homme dabbled as a touring member of Screaming Tree’s, he set about piecing together what eventuated as Queens of the Stone Age… Opening track and first song written under the new moniker, “Regular John” showcased the initial template of trance like rock blending a history of stoner rock tinged with a krautrock influence. Touring began with a primarily ex-Kyuss lineup, hinted at with the voicemail message from Nick Oliveri placed within this debut LP. Though with a creative force like Homme, stagnation doesn’t fly… Sophomore release Rated R found the songwriter supercharging his ideas with a love of classic rock, replete with Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford cameo on the anthemic opener “Feel Good Hit of the Summer”. A variety of singles helped push into main stream rock circles, breakthrough track “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret” finding outlets such as All Music take notice and highlight “…it’s still got the vaunted Arizona-desert vibes of Kyuss, but it evokes a more relaxed, spacious, twilight feel”.
Not dismissing any of the output from Mr. Homme, but for most of us it was the follow up Songs For the Deaf that is as dope an album that a band can come up with! A cheeky hint of concept album that took us on a drive from the hustle and bustle of the L.A. area out to Joshua Tree, with a radio DJ checking in on how the listener is going. Now truly experiencing global rock recognition on the strength of singles “Go With the Flow”, “First It Giveth” and “No One Knows”, a tune taking out the top spot in Triple J’s Hottest 100 listener poll! Studio efforts the likes of Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris may have divided fans to a degree, though the back catalogue of brilliance seemingly continues to grow… The Grammy Award nominated “…Like Clockwork” was simply a monster record!
So Cherry DJ’s will of course be spinnin’ the corker tracks from QOTSA, along with other stoner rock and alt-rock classics ’til late!
